Another method of treating Municipal solid waste is composting, a biological process in which the organic portion of refuse is allowed to decompose under carefully controlled conditions. Microbes metabolize the organic waste material and reduce its volume by as much as 50 percent.

The stabilized product is called compost or humus. It resembles potting soil in texture and odour and may be used as a soil conditioner or mulch.

What is Compost Made of?

While it's obvious by now that compost is made from the organic matter in our trash, it is safe to say that it has two main ingredients: greens and browns. Greens like fruit and vegetable waste, eggshells, and coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen. Browns like newspaper, cardboard, dry leaves, twigs, and branches are rich in carbon.

It is commonly prepared by decomposing plant, food waste, recycling organic materials and manure. The resulting mixture is rich in plant nutrients and beneficial organism, such as bacteria, protozoa, nematodes and fungi.

Compost is beneficial for

Turning organic matter in municipal solid waste into compost for the soil is remarkably beneficial

  • A great fertilizer for plants- Compost is rich in plant nutrients and beneficial organisms, and serves as a great fertilizer for plants. Adding it to soil can make for healthy plant growth while also making the soil more capable of retaining water and air.

  • Reduced soil erosion- With increased water retention capabilities and improved nutrient profile, the soil is much less likely to undergo erosion.

  • Balanced pH levels- Compost will help maintain pH levels in soil. For an acidic soil, it will raise the pH level, and for an alkaline soil, it will decrease it.

  • Reduced need for pesticides and other fertilizers- Compost will act as natural fertilizer for soil, eliminating a need for additional fertilizers. This is also economical. And the added nutrients and healthy plants mean the soil is more resilient to diseases, pests, and fungi.

  • Composting is economical- Not only do you save money on fertilizers, composting can greatly reduce the amount of waste to be sent to the landfills, in turn reducing disposal costs. This would also help deal with the shortage of land available to turn into landfill sites.
